Q: What ice cream flavors do you have?

A: Hot Fudge and Plain.
I kid you not.  This actually happened.
“Plain” ice cream?  Mmmmm, that sounds good, I’ll have two Plain ice creams, please.
I know I shouldn’t expect a lot when I pull into a drive-thru McDonald’s in Milford, CT.  But I do expect a basic level of intelligence…something on par with a 9 year [...]

I’m Back.

For the last 3 days, I’ve been completely without communications.  We packed up the house and had no Internet connection until today, and cell phone coverage is awful in our new apartment.  It has been painful and sometimes infuriating.
But now I’m back.  I owe many people phone calls.  You know who you are.  You will [...]

OK, there was some guilt

The movers came.  I was ecstatic.  I thought it would be glorious.  But it wasn’t…all because of guilt.
Greta felt so guilty about not helping that she had to leave the house.  If she had stayed, she would have spent the entire time trying to give the movers cold gatorade.  She might even have attempted to [...]

I give you money, you move my stuff

As I type, large sweaty men are moving boxes and furniture into a moving truck.  This is great.  I’m really looking forward to watching them wrestle our mattress down the stairs.  It sucks to move mattresses.
This concept of paying people to move stuff is very powerful.  They get value.  I get value.  We exchange value.
Then [...]

Deathly Hallows (NO SPOILERS)

The final installment of Harry Potter arrived in the mail over the weekend. In between packing up our possessions, we’ve been devouring it. As you can see in the pic, we ordered 2 copies. We always order 2 copies, because we like to read it at the same time. And because [...]

Greta Saw The Baby Move

He’s been moving around for awhile now, and Greta has been feeling kicks and punches for weeks.  Yesterday, she saw the baby move.  That’s right, with her eyes.
His strength, at this young age, is astounding.  He made Greta’s tummy move.  We’re not sure if it was a fist or a foot, but it was strong [...]

Some Jerk-Off With My Name Is Blogging!

I’m mad as hell.  Here I’ve gone to all this trouble to set up an eponymous blog to help extend my ego’s reach into the world, and some jerk-off with my name is competing with me.   It’s almost as if any idiot with a computer can just start a blog!
The guy is clearly a moron, [...]

I Got My Computer Back

I just got my computer back. Might as well write “I got my mojo back.”
I couldn’t be more excited to have my laptop home safe, where I can stare at it for hours every day. The desktop has the huge clunky keys and all the strange settings, not to mention feeling tethered to [...]

I want a new car

Now that we’ve decided to save all this money by living in Stamford, it’s time to start spending some of it.  I want a new car.
I’ve never had a new car.  My Mom believes in used cars, so that’s what I’ve always had.  She didn’t want to spoil her children.  Over the years, I’ve driven the [...]

Stamford: where dreams are made possible!

We listened to our readers.  In a highly scientific poll conducted right here on Herbietown, 57% of voters felt that Stamford was the best living choice.  Here at Herbietown, we value your opinion.
We just signed a lease in Stamford, CT, 3 blocks from my office and 2 blocks from lots of restaurants/bars etc.
We looked at [...]

Brooklyn vs. Stamford

We are continuing to struggle with our apartment decision.  I’m sure the loyal Herbietown readers are following this unfolding drama with intense interest.  Here’s the latest:
We started the day in Stamford, where we saw a 1st floor apartment 5 minutes (walking distance) from my office and 10 minutes from the train station.  The place is huge and very [...]

Fairfield County: where dreams go to die?

We looked at apartments in Stamford, Norwalk and Darien yesterday.  Some were really nice on the inside, but the neighborhoods were depressing.  We almost drove our car into Long Island Sound, on purpose.
No little coffeeshops (but there’s a Starbucks in the mall!), no cool stores (but there’s a Target 1 mile away!), no cute bookstores [...]

Hilarious Stanford GSB Video

Thanks to Colin for sharing this with me.

And the gender is…

It’s a boy!
Woo Hoo!
We were pretty convinced that he was going to be a she. Mostly, I think, because of all the inappropriate jokes I’ve made about not wanting girls. I just feel a little uncomfortable about the whole birds and the bees thing, with girls.
However, going into the appointment this morning, I [...]

We Find Out The Gender TODAY!

Very exciting stuff.  Look for an update in a few short hours…

Where should we live?

We just got back from Greece.  Now we need to decide where to live!
I start work on August 16, and it’d be nice to be moved in by then.  My father has repeatedly offered to let us stay in the apartment over the garage in Fairfield, so we don’t have to make any forced decisions.  [...]

Cryptonomicon

Huge sloppy wet kiss to Casey for recommending an incredible book: Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. A geeky thriller with action, history, math, internet, war, treasure, and mystery.

Baby

There have been requests for more information on Greta and the baby.  This amuses me.  I’ve been keeping journals for the past 10 years, and many of them are addressed to my unborn child….it’s a very strange practice that a psychologist would probably have a field day with.  But my children will never be starved [...]

Santorini

We decided to stay in Santorini for the rest of our trip.  Why island-hop when you’re in a beautiful place?  Traveling wore us out a little bit, especially my intimate familiarity with the European barfbags on the high speed ferry from Crete.
What a trip!  We spent time in Athens, Sparta, Rhodes, Crete and Santorini.  We [...]

European Bathrooms! &%$@!!

Do you remember discovering that some portion of your bathroom routine was starkly different from the routine followed by your peers?  Most likely, you came across some detail in college, when discussing personal hygeine habits with your friends.  Maybe you wad the toilet paper, but your friends fold?
The only one I feel comfortable sharing here [...]

Some photos added

I’ve been able to upload a few photos here.  More to come over time.

Questions for Greeks (part 1)

Things are different here.  William Gibson once described London as a “mirror world” (to the US), where things were mostly the same but something was just off/different/out of place.  As I look around Greece, I think the anology needs to be strengthened: perhaps a “crazy irrational funhouse mirror world.”  Since I’m on a “reason” kick, I try [...]

100 Euro a Day

For this second phase of our trip, the Moon Two phase (short for honeymoon), we set a budget of 100 Euro/day.  It seemed like a reasonable budget.
Yesterday, we spent 328 Euros.  This is not a good start.

Breakfast: 7.50
Grocery, snacks: 5.00
Car: 28.33 (yesterday’s portion of the rental car bill)
Map: 8.00
Knossos Tour: 9.00
Lunch: 19.30
Gas: 35.00
Beer at pool: [...]

Best Restaurant in Greece

We found it. It’s called Avli, and it’s in Rethymno on the northern coast of Crete. Avli scored a perfect 20 on our rating scale.
Located in an old Venetian palace (circa 1560), Avli serves up traditional Cretan cuisine. They have a restaurant, a bar, a wine room, an inn, and a grocery [...]
