Listing Our Condo

We posted a “For Sale By Owner” sign in the front yard, with an “info tube” containing a flyer for the condo. If you’re reading this, then you won’t need to drop by to pick up the flyer…instead you can just peruse the website.
The wheels are in motion for an MLS listing as well. [...]

You’re Trying To Tell Me Gays WON’T Burn In Hell?

Today, Rudy Guiliani announced his support for abortion rights, gun control, and gay rights. New York Times coverage here. Is it possible that a Republican with a brain can win the nomination?
I doubt it.
It will be very difficult to get past the 60% of Republicans that believe homosexuals will burn in Hell. [...]

Tom Wolfe Weighs In On The Meaning Of Life

Tom Wolfe is one of my favorite authors. He wrote lots of amazing stuff, including Bonfire of the Vanities, A Man In Full, I am Charlotte Simmons, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, The New Journalism and many others.
I have no idea when he wrote this article, but anyone interested in the meaning of life [...]

Morality Rooted In Biology?

Interesting article in the WSJ today about a recent experiment conducted at Harvard.  Researchers found that individuals who had experienced damage to a specific portion of their brain were less likely to express moral sensitivity.
This supports an idea that I discovered a few weeks ago (in a reading for Ethics class) on the connection between [...]

Selflessness?

The nominations for the Tuck Centennial Award have been released. Here is the text of the award qualifications:
The Tuck Centennial Award is awarded to a first-year and a second-year student who exemplify the spirit and character of the Tuck School. Chosen by their classmates, recipients embody outstanding leadership, selflessness in [...]

Hello Baby, Goodbye Gourmet Dinner

I know, I know, it’s totally not “cool” to post pictures of your meal on your blog. (Unless you publish a cool food blog.)
But I’ve received almost no pity for my situation, so I thought a picture would help.
Anyone who’s ever had the privilege to be invited to our house for dinner knows that [...]

Dyson Eats Razr

We got a Dyson Animal vacuum cleaner for Christmas. (Thanks Mom!) It’s one of the best gifts I have ever received. Greta and I fight over who gets to vacuum, and I usually win.
But last week it did something bad.
I was vacuuming near the outlet where we charge our phones, and I [...]

Bias in WSJ dot-portraits?

This is the WSJ’s version of Barack Obama’s picture.
Does anyone else feel that it’s not the most flattering picture of him?
some WSJ coverage of him here
More on this later, when I have time…please feel free to post comments below. I’d like to look at the other candidates’ pictures, too.

Fascination with Mitsu Continues…

Thanks to Allan for passing these along.

Welcome to the New Herbietown Blog!

I just made the switch from Blogger to Wordpress. It was painful, but well worth it. Blogger is an excellent tool if you don’t care too much about customization and just want something easy. I switched to Wordpress because I wanted more control over my site. There are hundreds (if not [...]

Life Before The Segway

The Onion continues to be the best. Incidentally, I want a segway…and graduation is coming up…
At Segway of Northern New England, you can get all the various models (new models starting at $5,145 and used models starting at $1,500)

It’s About Time

Yesterday, New Hampshire lawmakers passed a bill allowing civil unions for gay and lesbian couples. It’s about time.
I still don’t understand why people insist on drawing a line between the terms “civil union” and “marriage.” It’s like we’re saying: “we’ll give you the rights you deserve, but don’t expect us to say it’s normal [...]

Ethics Download: How Black Markets Can Be Ethical

Dean Hansen visited my Ethics class today for a discussion about copyright in the digital age (which is also the topic of my independent study). We discussed a progression of cases that worked through the courts and helped establish current law: from Cherry Auction to Napster to Grokster to YouTube.
The central issue we discussed was [...]

Is YouTube Unethical?

I figured out why my independent study (on copyrights in the digital world) has been stressing me out so much: the issues raised are extremely difficult to reconcile for someone with a strong libertarian bent.
You see, I believe that free expression is the cornerstone of an ideal society….I’ve spent a healthy chunk of my time [...]

I Will Name My Baby “Mitsu”

Thank you Nancy Block for posting this classic pic. If my first child is a masculine child, we might have to name it “Mitsu.” Hint: he’s the one on the left.
Update 1: Mitsu informs me that there is a religion in Tokyo with a deity named “Mitsu.” I couldn’t tell whether this [...]

Tuck Class Picture

We took our class picture today. It was fun. The sun was shining in our eyes, so most of us were squinting. (Click on the picture to see it with better resolution)
We booed all the latecomers as they ran across the parking lot. That was fun.
Bonus points: who’s missing from the picture?

I’m Pregnant!

Technically, Greta is doing most of the work…Baby is due November 26 (which puts us just shy of 11 weeks). We are frantically calling everyone we know, but I just had to put this video up.
We had a little scare at the hospital yesterday when the doctor couldn’t find the baby’s heartbeat with a doppler. [...]
