Yesterday, New Hampshire lawmakers passed a bill allowing civil unions for gay and lesbian couples. It’s about time.

I still don’t understand why people insist on drawing a line between the terms “civil union” and “marriage.” It’s like we’re saying: “we’ll give you the rights you deserve, but don’t expect us to say it’s normal to be gay.”

Our children and grandchildren are going to look back at this period of time the same way we look back at segregated baseball or even slavery. Why didn’t the ethical people do more to convince the unethical people that their positions were outrageous, cruel and stupid?

In a democracy, we cannot sit on the sidelines….if we care about our country, we need to get involved and push for change. Or others will.
