My friend Tim went to a Sonic Youth show last week. They played one of their old albums straight through from beginning to end.
There are certain bands that I would love to see in this format: Outkast, Violent Femmes, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, and obviously Nirvana and Sublime (if it were possible).
It’s a little depressing to read that “The Album Is Dead.” I know that the digital music revolution has given power to consumers who don’t want to purchase an entire album, and that I should be waving the “choice” flag right now, but I just can’t get that excited about the death of the album. My teenage years were filled with devoted album listening. There’s something about listening to tunes in the order the artists wanted them to be heard…seeing connections and really tuning in with the music.
Anyway, the WSJ covered this topic here. You might need a subscription to read the article.
